Whether you’re learning Spanish from scratch or looking to take your existing skills to the next level, our programs are designed to help you make meaningful progress while experiencing Mexico.
Learning doesn’t stop when class finishes. Throughout your program, you’ll have opportunities to put your Spanish into practice through cultural activities, local experiences, and group trips. You might find yourself learning to make Mexican food, dancing salsa, exploring historic towns, visiting ancient sites, or simply having conversations with local people — all while discovering a side of Mexico that most visitors never experience.
For an even deeper immersion experience, you can stay with a local Mexican family and use Spanish as part of everyday life. Private accommodation is also available if you’d prefer greater independence.

Our Story
Iguana Abroad began with a simple idea: to share our love of Mexico and the Spanish language with people from around the world. What started as a passion for learning, travel, and cultural exchange has grown into a Spanish immersion experience that brings those things together.
Over ten years ago, we arrived in Mexico and quickly realised we had found somewhere we wanted to call home. We fell in love with the country’s food, landscapes, culture, people, and extraordinary diversity — and, of course, with the Spanish language. The more time we spent here, the more we wanted others to experience Mexico in the same way.
That is what Iguana Abroad is all about. We believe the best way to learn Spanish is to step outside the classroom and become part of the life around you. Our programs combine Spanish learning with genuine cultural experiences, meaningful connections, and the opportunity to discover Mexico beyond the usual tourist trail.
Our goal is simple: to help you become more confident in Spanish while giving you an unforgettable experience of a country we are proud to call home.

Our approach goes beyond the traditional classroom, helping students build practical Spanish skills while experiencing Mexico from a local perspective.
Our programs combine personalized Spanish lessons with structured language exchanges, cultural activities, local experiences, and guided weekend trips. From learning to cook Mexican food and dancing salsa to exploring historic towns, ancient sites, and natural landscapes, every part of the experience gives you more opportunities to speak Spanish and connect with Mexican culture.
We also stand behind the results. Unlike many Spanish courses in Mexico, Iguana Abroad guarantees that participants progress by at least one level on the CEFR scale during each two-week program. The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is the internationally recognized system used to measure language proficiency, from A1 for beginners through to C2 for near-native speakers. In practical terms, our goal is for you to finish each two-week program speaking and understanding Spanish at a demonstrably higher level than when you arrived.
For an even deeper immersion experience, you can stay with a local Mexican family and use Spanish as part of everyday life. Private accommodation is also available if you prefer greater independence.

Harry Liuba-Carmichael
Program Director
Harry has been involved in language learning and teaching his whole life, with a dedication that led him all the way to a master's degree from the University of Oxford. That said, it was only a few days after his graduation that he was back again on the Mexican Caribbean with a 'cerveza' in his hand.

Holding a degree in English Literature as well as the language teaching certificates 'TEFL' and 'CELTA' Harry has let his passion for language and education take him around the world - although, after visiting Mexico for the third time he just couldn't leave, he loved it too much!
Fabiola Sánchez Quiroz
Spanish Immersion Coordinator
Fabiola is a local artist who grew up between the Mexican towns of Cuernavaca and Tepoztlán. She knows Mexico better than anyone on the team and is in charge of our Spanish Immersion scheduling - ensuring our students have the most diverse and authentic time possible while they are here!
